If the Shoe Fits!

Our feet are made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. If your feet aren’t getting the support they need, that can lead to problems like blisters, bunions, and hammertoes. Lack of support doesn’t only cause foot pain, it can also cause pain in your knees and your back. Here are some tips to help you avoid wearing the wrong shoes that can cause you foot pain:

1. Check your shoe size –Your feet can change over time due to many different things like age, weight, or other health conditions. If you haven’t had your feet measured for awhile, its worth the trip to the shoe store!

2. Be aware of your arches –People need different support based on the type of arch they have. The curve of your shoe needs to support your arches so they can support your feet and body. Your Podiatrist can help you figure out what shoe is best for your type of arch.

3. Wear shoes to match your activities –Don’t just choose shoes based on appearance, make sure it can give you the support you need throughout your day and all your various activities.

4. Break shoes in slowly –When it comes to leather shoes or hiking boots, they may need some breaking in before they feel comfortable. Take it slowly and give it time to avoid problems.

5. Wear slippers –If you have foot pain, it could be from walking or standing barefoot on hard surfaces that can put too much stress on the structures of the feet. Slippers with soft insoles or plush mats where you stand for long periods of time can help.

6. Try insoles –If you have foot pain, you may need more support than the insole that came with your shoes. Look into new insoles that can help ease your pain.

7. Go shoe shopping –Worn out shoes can cause foot pain. If your shoes are showing signs of wear and tear or start to feel differently, it may be time to go shoe shopping!Feet support our body weight every day while we stand, walk, or run! A good pair of shoes is critical for the comfort and health of your feet. If you are having persistent foot pain, contact Dr. Kylin Kovac for an evaluation!
