Prevent Falls with These Tips!

According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among older Americans, falls are the number one cause of injuries and death from injury. Seniors have  a greater risk of falls, and with that comes an increased risk of injuries,  hospitalizations, and complications due to falls. Foot pain is not a normal consequence of getting older. Healthy feet and ankles contribute to a full and active lifestyle, but they can also help reduce a senior’s risk for dangerous and deadly falls. Since September is National Fall Prevention Month, we wanted to pass along some important information from The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons on how you can lower your risk of falls.

  1. Do not ignore pain: Do not resign yourself to aching and suffering, foot pain is not normal at any age! You likely have a treatable condition. For a proper diagnosis and intervention, be sure to pay attention to your feet and see a foot and ankle surgeon if and when you experience pain.
  2. Examine your feet: You are the gatekeeper of your own health, making regular at-home foot examinations critical. At the sign of bumps, lumps, or other changes in your feet, make an appointment with your foot and ankle surgeon.
  3. Exercise: Simple stretching exercises can help you maintain strength and mobility in your feet and ankles, as well as provide pain relief. Talk to your foot and ankle surgeon about appropriate exercises for you.
  4. Protect: Use padding, insoles, or whatever special footwear you are prescribed. Be sure to wear these, along with comfortable, sensible shoes, every day.
  5. Be flexible: Know that at times, surgery is the most appropriate treatment for a given condition. Fortunately, many simple surgical techniques allow foot surgery to be performed on an outpatient basis.

By following these tips, you may be able to reduce your risk of a life-altering slip or fall. Keeping your feet healthy can improve your balance, coordination, and stability.
